Analytics / Field note
One revenue definition, every dashboard
When GA4, the ad platforms and finance disagree, the fix is agreed definitions — not another chart.
Every growing business reaches the meeting where marketing's revenue, finance's revenue and the dashboard's revenue are three different numbers — and the meeting becomes about the numbers instead of the decisions. The fix is rarely a new tool. It is one agreed definition per metric, written down.
Fix tracking at the source
Most disagreement starts in GA4 and tag manager: duplicate purchase events, missing currency, consent-mode gaps nobody documented. Audit the event stream against real orders before building anything on top of it. A dashboard on broken events is a confident lie.
Define each KPI once
What counts as revenue — gross, net of refunds, net of tax? What counts as a conversion — the purchase event or the thank-you page view? Write each definition in one page, get finance and marketing to sign it, and point every dashboard at that page.
Build the dashboard last
Power BI or Tableau on clean, agreed tables is a straightforward build. Power BI or Tableau on disputed exports is decoration. The order matters: source tracking, agreed definitions, modelled tables, then the visual layer — with refresh schedules and access controls documented.
